Addiction & Mental Health Counseling
Ongoing struggles with mental health issues, alcohol, and drug abuse are generally lonely and isolating experiences. The transition from being symptomatic, or actively using substances, to being in recovery can be overwhelming, painstaking, and complicated. Jonathan Paul, LMSW, a licensed social worker, will be your guide through the early recovery process from detoxification (if substance dependence is involved) to stabilization to maintenance. Jonathan will work with you to uncover, identify, and overcome your roadblocks to recovery. You too can return to a functional, joyful life or create one that you never knew existed. This process happens via detailed treatment planning within the framework of our safe and confidential therapeutic alliance.
Counseling in recovery from mental health and substance use disorders changes focus as you advance from early recovery to sustained long-term recovery. Early recovery therapy focuses on the basics. The theme of making recovery a priority is introduced. During this phase you will develop and implement recovery-based coping tools. These new methods will become lifelong resources to aid you in becoming emotionally stronger and more resilient in times of stress or uncertainty.
Next, community resources are identified and added to the recovery armamentarium. You will begin to feel comfortable utilizing these vital resources. This further enhances the structure that supports long-term recovery from both mental health and substance use disorders. You will be able to function in your community as a productive and successful participant.
After a strong foundation is established and you begin to navigate your recovery and emotional world with ease, you can then begin to explore the underlying issues that arise from family of origin, consequences of past behavior, and interpersonal relationships. When opening the door to the past at this stage, you will already have the basic coping skills and support needed to feel and get past sometimes painful memories or emotional growing pains. At this later stage you will also have a more stabilized neurochemistry that adds to the emotional stability needed to get through this important work.
We can help guide you on the path of recovery and help you successfully navigate all the joys as well as pitfalls along the way.
Recovery Coaching
Recovery Coaching is a more intensive care plan where we meet in your residence or community to establish new goals and routines, which we will carry out together. It is an effective complement to weekly in-office counseling visits, and a way for clients to “jump-start” the recovery process.
We offer Recovery Coaching for individuals struggling with both mental health and substance use disorders. The important thing to remember is that during coaching sessions we come to you, to work with you in your world. Together, we develop and implement new routines and structures that promote and support your recovery. Interacting with you in your environment allows us to get to know you faster, which in turn allows us to identify potential barriers to your growth. Together we remove these barriers and help you move forward while coordinating care with your psychotherapist, psychiatrist or family member.
Recovery Coaching is a great support service for people returning to their communities after discharging from residential treatment, and can also be used very effectively as an alternative to yet another admission to an inpatient or residential facility. It is an extremely useful tool for the client who is feeling “stuck” or “stagnant”. For some of our clients, it is often the missing link in their care plans and can essentially be described as in-home support. Recovery Coaching can be especially useful for failure-to-launch young adults and is often used in times of crisis.
Here are some activities that you might do with your Recovery Coach.

At Jon Paul Recovery, we coordinate all of your care so that all providers and designated family members are up-to-date with current treatment goals and progress.
Allow us to take this weight off you or your family member’s shoulders so that all can focus on healing and feeling well again.
